This health organisation, Te Whatu Ora, is known for serving a population of over 425,000 across a diverse geographic range. Currently operating five hospital sites, including a tertiary teaching hospital, two care facilities, and one mental health inpatient facility, it also funds several other services offered by NGOs, pharmacies, and primary healthcare organisations. With a goal to deliver seamless service and improve overall health equity, the organisation has seen increased collaboration on regional planning, clinical service planning, and clinical record sharing across regions and different healthcare sectors.Position Overview
The Geriatrician role within this esteemed organisation is a vital one. With the opportunity to significantly influence service growth, the successful applicant will be a key contributor to the development and implementation of effective models of geriatric care. There is also an opportunity for general medical practice as service development includes better integration of the geriatric service into acute care.
The geriatric services provide seamless service delivery of:
  • Rehabilitation for adults 18-65 years of age;
  • Organised stroke services including acute stroke service with attached rehabilitation space;
  • Orthogeriatric rehabilitation; and
Rehabilitation and support for chronic neurological conditions and other chronic conditions.The hospital has developed the community out-reach services and supported discharge models; built a major Specialist Services for Older People and Rehabilitation (2013), (including the co-location of Mental Health Services for Older People facility, a purpose-built space totalling 113 beds for the inpatient team to work in the most efficient way possible. The teams practice within an interdisciplinary model and are supported by high quality clinical leadership.Responsibilities
  • Play an active role in service development through strategic contribution to geriatric care models
  • Engage with community out-reach services and support discharge models
  • Advocate for elderly patients, providing comprehensive care in both medical and surgical environments
  • Contribute to teaching and research efforts when the opportunity arises
Requirements
  • Hold FRACP or equivalent specialist qualification.
  • Subspecialist training in geriatrics
  • Valid Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or eligibility to apply for Provisional Vocational Registration
  • Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
