This is a rare opportunity to work in the beautiful Bay of Plenty looking after a diverse population in a region blessed with a warm sunny climate, outstanding natural beauty and an abundance of opportunities for outdoor pursuits.The increasing population of the city has prompted the expansion of psychiatry services and the need for an additional full time consultant psychiatrist. The psychiatry department provides geographically modelled services in hospital and community with a total bed count of 34 beds across the region split between 2 sites.The region has a local branch of the RANZCP (Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists) Upper Central North Island training programme (UCNI). All psychiatry registrar runs are accredited for basic training. Advanced training has been accredited in older persons, adult and child and adolescent psychiatry. There are up to eight registrars working in the service.The community mental health and addiction teams are multi-disciplinary teams which comprise Psychiatrist, Registrar, Clinical Psychologist(s), Registered Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and a Team Leader. There is an afterhours crisis service with calls triaged by a telephone call centre.The regional Adult addiction Specialist service (BOPAS) is based in Tauranga. Services are provided across the district. In addition to the adult mental health services, Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty provides specialist services for children and young people (CAMHS), older people (MHSOP) and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry (CL). Afterhours the psychiatrist on call may be required to provide assessments and oversight of treatment for patients needing to access these services.Key Responsibilities of the role
  • provide specialist psychiatric care in accordance with accepted professional standards regarding conduct, ethics and clinical skills;
  • function as part of a multidisciplinary team in the assessment and management of patients referred to the Clinical Service;
  • supervise registrars, trainees and other SMOs as required;
  • liaise with other agencies or doctors or departments within Te Whatu Ora Hauora where appropriate for the assessment and management of
patients; * appropriately document clinical work;
  • participate in the on-call after hours roster
  • contribute to quality improvement initiatives and audit within the Mental Health and Addiction services;
Role RequirementsTo be successful in your application to this exciting opportunity as the Consultant Psychiatrist we are looking to identify the following on your profile and past history:
  • FRANZCP or equivalent specialist qualification in psychiatry recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand for vocational registration
  • Vocational registration or eligibility for this with the Medical Council of New Zealand in the scope of psychiatry
