At Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Taranaki we serve a population of approximately 124,380 people, of which 19.8% identify as Māori, residing within the geographical area that is described as ‘Paraninihi ki Waitōtara, Waitōtara ki Taipakē’; spanning from the white cliffs of Pukearuhe to the Waitōtara River in Ngā Rauru and from the Waitōtara river to Taipakē which is the most southern point of the Ngā Rauru iwi.The Pouhāpai is a Whanau Engagement and Experience Specialists within Te Pā Harakeke - Māori Health and Equity DIrectorate. Alongside other Pouhāpai in the team, the role will act as a key interface between whānau Māori and the Health New Zealand Te WHatu Ora Taranaki. It is the responsibility of the Pouhāpai to maintain the standards and quality of care that promotes optimal health outcomes and Pae Ora for Māori patients and their whānau.This will be achieved by supporting whānau to navigate services provided by Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Taranaki, facilitating seamless referral pathways to appropriate internal and external services, and providing guidance across the organisation to lift our performance and cultural competency standard when engaging with Māori.What you can expect day-to-day:
  • This position is based in New Plymouth but would need to cover the Hāwera Hospital with opportunities to support Taranaki Base Hospital.

  • Participates confidently in te ao Māori and has a working knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori.
  • Understands the dimensions of Māori health and health practices and can apply kaupapa Māori models of health in practice.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a commitment to te reo Māori and tikanga.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently, part of a team, and across departments.
  • Able to build networks and relationships throughout the Te Whatu Ora Taranaki, primary care services, and across sectors.
  • Ability to cope with a high and varied workload including uncertain and emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates excellent time management and the ability to prioritise and multitask.
  • Always demonstrates ability to maintain confidentiality.
