Te whiwhinga mahi: The opportunityWe are seeking a GP lead for our school-based health services team.Pinnacle’s School Based Health Services (SBHS) provides care for rangatahi (young people), supporting their mana through a positive youth development approach to healthcare. The SBHS programme, with registered nurses working in 42 school clinics across the Waikato, has undergone rapid and substantial growth.The GP lead of SBHS works closely with the SBHS clinical services manager, Pinnacle Midlands Health Network, school nurses, GP clinicians and other providers and stakeholders, to provide support, education, and quality improvement to the service.Our SBHS builds relationships between health, school and community, and supports whānau/ families of the students to maximise their young person’s development and health status. SBHS will encourage enrolment in general practice.This role is permanent working 0.2 FTE.Key responsibilities include:
  • Providing clinical advice regarding appropriate management of presentations assessed as needing attention before the next school GP clinic, especially when symptoms are undifferentiated.
  • Providing clinical support and advice in a timely manner, such as discussing complex presentations and when first priority is unclear.
  • Actively contributing to risk management including audits, with a particular focus on clinical risk.
  • Recruitment and retention of SBHS clinicians.
  • Annual review and development of Standing Orders.
  • Leading clinical peer group meetings.
  • Maintaining key relationships with Pinnacle’s clinical director, national groups and other primary care stakeholders to facilitate improved care in SBHS.

  • Hold a current APC with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Able to provide a CV with 2-3 referees.
  • Are vocationally registered.
  • Have proven experience working with rangatahi youth, preferably in a school setting for at least 4 years.
  • Have an understanding of the dynamics and complexities of youth health.
  • Be committed to removing barriers for rangatahi in accessing primary health care services and improving the health literacy of Aotearoa New Zealand’s youth.
  • Be able to work cross-culturally, in a culturally safe and appropriate manner.
  • Be available to the SBHS team.
  • Be required on occasion to work in the Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) office and undertake occasional site visits to school clinics.
